On The Ground

This unit in southwestern Nevada consists of the Silver Peak Range, Fish Lake Valley, and the eastern slope of the Boundary Peak Wilderness within the Inyo National Forest. Terrain is very diverse, ranging from low-lying flats and agricultural fields to high mountain peaks.

This area has a large variety of terrain that holds game.

Terrain

The western portion here is more typical of the basin and range terrain features with single ridge mountain ranges running north and south, with deep canyons running both east and west.

  • Roughly 971 square miles

  • 95% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,800-12,500 feet

Desert shrub, low sagebrush, creosote and Joshua trees are found in lower valley bottoms and benches. Pinyon/juniper can be found from around 6,500-8,000 feet. Sagebrush, mountain brush, big sagebrush and mountain mahogany are also found from 8,000-11,000 feet with open passes of loose rock and boulders above 11,000 feet.

The unit has good public access with some private property in the valley floors and foothills. Boundary Peak Wilderness does include some of the north western part of the unit and travels restrictions are enforced here. There are also private ranches and agricultural ground in the valleys and foothills.

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles and ATVs are helpful

  • Mostly public ground with private agriculture ground in valleys and foothills

  • Boundary Peak Wilderness encompasses part of the unit

Main roads:

  • Highway 265 is the eastern boundary

  • California/Nevada State line is the western boundary

  • Highway 6 is the northern and part of the western boundary

Full services are available in the town of Tonopah, but food and most services are also available in the towns of Dyer and Goldfield. There are great camping spots within the unit that offer spots for both campers and tents. Hunters will find beautiful spots in the high country to set up spike camps to hunt from as well.
