On The Ground

Consisting mainly of the Pine Grove Hills east and southeast of Wellington, this unit is a good place for hunters who want to fill a deer or antelope tag but are not concerned with taking a trophy-class animal.

Mule deer here are migratory, but this is one of the few units where hunters are allowed to hunt bucks during the peak of the rut.

Terrain

With views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, this unit has some broad valleys, including Pine Grove Flat, and numerous mountains and hills, most of them part of the Pine Grove Mountains. The Walker River cuts through the southern end. Most of the unit is in the Toiyabe National Forest. Some private land is scattered along the Walker River and along some of the borders, such as near Wellington.

  • Roughly 448 square miles

  • 95.7% public land

  • Elevations from 4,400-9,500 feet

Most terrain is covered by high desert brushland, featuring mainly sagebrush and pinyon/juniper forests. Some high mountains support several species of conifers as well as aspens and mahoganies. The forest can be dense, while brushlands are open.

Hunters enjoy good vehicle access on public land. Secondary and primitive roads branch from Highway 338 to the west and Highway 359 from the east by way of Lucky Boy Pass. Sometimes a four-wheel-drive vehicle with good tires is needed to travel some roads, especially if snow is on the ground.

  • Some roads are rocky

  • Hunters can drive to most high country

  • Be mindful of private property near the Flying M Ranch

Few established camping areas exist. Some hunters camp along the West Walker River at Wilson Canyon and along the East Walker River near The Elbow. Some hunters camp along dirt roads, some of which are well-maintained.

  • Motels are in Hawthorne and Yerington

  • Campers along rivers can fish
