On The Ground
Major landmark includes the Stillwater Range. Vegetated public land is mostly covered by desert brush, pionyon, and juniper. Land ranges from 3,400-8,700 feet above sea level. Road access is good in most regions of the unit; some areas are accessible only by hiking.
There are also some antelope scattered throughout the unit.
Terrain
Steep elevation changes in much of the Stillwater Range. The remainder of the unit is relatively mild with rolling hills to flat in the valleys. Elevations range from 3,400 feet in the valley floors to approximately 8,700 feet at Job Peak. Scattered natural and artificial water sources.
Roughly 1,063 square miles
96.9% public land
Elevations from 5,000 to a little more than 7,500 feet
Vegetation
Desert brush dominates most of the unit’s vegetated public land, while portions of Fairview Peak holds small stands of juniper. Lahontan Valley is covered with mostly agricultural crops, and remainder of the low elevation areas of the unit are made up of salt flats and wetlands.
Access
Widely public land. Public access restrictions only occur in areas of the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, at the southwest corner of the unit, and at the Boyer Ranch and Ormat geothermal power plant in Dixie Valley. Limitations primarily occur in the highest elevations of the Stillwater Range. The primary route to access the southwestern side of the Stillwater Range includes the east Carson Sink Road, while the northwestern side is best accessed from the Dago Pass Road. The Dago Pass Road and Grass Valley Road also provides good access to the northern reach of the unit. The West Dixie Valley Road serves as the best route to access the eastern side of the Stillwater Range. US Highway 50 serves as the best route to access the southern tip of the unit.
Camping and Lodging
Carry plenty of supplies, food, water, and spare tires. The closest lodging is provided in Fallon, Nevada, near the southwest corner of the unit. Motels are also available in Fernley, Nevada, to the far west. General supplies are also provided at each of these locations. Fuel and a hot meal are available at Middle Gate, Nevada, located on US Highway 50, southeast of the unit.
Hunters can camp almost anywhere on public land.
