On The Ground

Located on the Utah-Nevada border and covered by the Humboldt National Forest and BLM land, this unit offers great public access. The Snake Range holds some great animals of various species, giving hunters different opportunities to hunt the great area.

This unit has everything to offer for hunters looking for an adventure. Remote wilderness, elk, mule deer, antelope and it is one of only a few areas in the state that holds Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. It may be difficult to draw an elk tag. This unit has great public access.

Terrain

Snake Mountain range with peaks reaching over 12,000 feet high runs north and south through the unit. The backbone of that mountain range has steep and deep canyons that run to the valley floors. Out of the desert valley are rolling foothills, especially in the northern half.

  • Roughly 586 square miles

  • 98.8% public land

  • Elevations from 5,100-12,067 feet

With nearly 7,000 feet of elevation changes hunters can expect the large variation in vegetation. The valley floor is covered in different grasses and sagebrush. Pinyon pines and juniper trees spread throughout the middle elevations of the unit. As you get higher in elevations there are aspens that grow in the bottoms of the canyons and drainages along with a conifer forest that grows on the steep slopes. The very tops of the mountains are above treelines and are covered in grass and shale.

There are maintained gravel roads leading to four-wheel-drive or ATV roads spread throughout the unit. The Mount Moriah Wilderness is limited to foot traffic.

  • ATVs recommended

  • Great public access

This unit is isolated and does not have a lot of towns that offer supplies anywhere near it. Most hunters will camp near the unit on public land, as there are a lot of good camping areas. There is gas and lodging near Baker on the stateline and located in the southeast corner of the unit.

  • Backpack camping is a great option for the wilderness area
