On The Ground

The boundaries for this unit encompass half of the Pilot Range on the Utah border and the small mountains north of Wendover. Elevations rocket from 4,200-10,300 feet above sea level on Pilot Peak and hold mule deer, elk, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope.

Elk hunting is unique because Nevada residents who draw Unit 091 tags and Utah residents who draw Box Elder, Pilot Mountain tags may hunt on both sides of the border. A small number of mule deer inhabit Unit 091.

Terrain

Most of the Pilot Range is steep, while the rest of the unit has rolling hills, deep and shallow swales, benches and extensive flats.Water sources are limited and scattered; most water sources are higher than 6,500 feet.

  • Roughly 278 square miles

  • 68.8% public land

  • Elevations from 4,200 in Pilot Creek Valley to about 10,300 feet on Pilot Peak

Most land is covered by sagebrush and dense thickets of pinyon-juniper along with small pockets of mountain mahoganies and alpine conifers. Low desert plants such as winter fat, halogeton, shadscale and salt bush grow in low valleys.

Most property is public and vehicle access is good. An exception is a private ranch on the west side of Pilot Mountain. Hunters can use other roads to get around the ranch. Pilot Road accesses the western side of the unit, while Interstate 80 is on the south, State Route 233 is in the north, and roads from Utah lead into the eastern part of the Pilot Range. Various primitive roads are open to trucks and ATVs.

The closest motels are in Well and Wendover. Both are on Interstate 80. Hunters can buy fuel or get hot meals in Montelo on State Route 233 in the northwest. Camping is allowed almost anywhere on public land.
