On The Ground
The most eastern subunit in the 07 unit group. Unit 079 is located between Wells and Wendover and offers mule deer, elk, and limited antelope hunting. The Toano Range is the only major landmark within this unit. Primarily public ground managed by the BLM.
Unit 079 is known to hold a fair population of elk and mule deer, with an opportunity to harvest a mature buck or bull. Deer numbers typically increase with fall migration. The late rifle and late archery seasons are best for locating trophy mule deer bucks.
Terrain
Rolling hills giving way to some steep terrain in the Toano Range. Water sources are limited and scattered with more being found at higher elevations above 6,500 feet in elevation. Higher elevations have jagged, rocky terrain. Lower elevations are primarily flat, sage-covered valleys.
Roughly 234 square miles
56.7% public land
Elevations from about 4,600-8,037 feet
Vegetation
Sagebrush covers much of the unit. Dense stands of pinyon and juniper trees are found in the Toano Range in the highest elevations. Some of the low lying valleys are covered in winter fat, saltbrush, salt marshes and salt flats.
Access
The vast majority of this area is public ground administered by the BLM and access is not an issue. Limited private ground is found near Oasis and along the western edge of the unit.
Camping and Lodging
Hunters may get motel rooms and general supplies in Wells, west of the unit, or Wendover to the east, both of which are located on US Highway Interstate 80. Hunters can camp anywhere on public land. Just north of the unit is Montello, with a small general store, motel and restaurant.
