Hunters recognize this unit for a few of its major landmarks. Knoll Mountain, Granite Range, and Gollaher Mountain. The vegetated areas mainly covered by sagebrush, have land ranges from 5,200-8,760 feet above sea level. Road access is excellent on public land.
Steep elevation changes on all major land marks. Most other areas are relatively mild with rolling hills and flats. Scattered natural and artificial water sources, higher concentrations of sources in the upper elevations.
Sagebrush dominates most of the unit. Many of the Drainages of the Granite Range, Knoll Mountain and Gollaher Mountain harbor aspen stands, while the highest elevations of the Granite Range harbor mountain mahoganies. The area on the east side of Knoll Mountain and within the Trout Creek drainage harbors dense stands of juniper trees.
Widely public land. The majority of the private parcels are within and in close proximity to Jackpot, Nevada. Public road access is very good in most areas of the unit. Areas not accessible by vehicle and be reached by foot.
Few primary routes enable hunters to access various areas within the unit. US Highway 93 serves as the best route to access the west side of Knoll Mountain and the Granite range. The west side of Gollaher can also be best reached indirectly from Gollaher Mountain. County Road 765 provides the best access to the east side of the Knoll Mountain and Gollaher Mountain. The Trout Creek drainage road, stemming east from US Highway 93, provides excellent access into the east side of the Granite Range, northern Knoll Mountain and Tijuana John Peak area. The California Trail National Back Country Byway, which also stems east from US Highway 93, near Jackpot, Nevada, serves as the best route to access the north side of Gollaher Mountain. Other primitive roads stemming from these primary routes provide better direct access into most areas of the unit.
Carry plenty of supplies, food, water and spare tires. The closest motels are provided in Jackpot, Nevada, located at the northwest corner of the unit and Wells, Nevada, located south of the unit. Better lodging accommodations are provided in Jackpot, Nevada. General supplies and fuel are also provided at both locations. Hunters can also camp anywhere on public land.
