On The Ground

This unit includes the Truckee, Seven Troughs, Trinity and Selenite ranges the Lava Beds; and the Nightingale, Shawave and Kamma mountains. Mostly covered by desert plants, deer browse is limited, so deer numbers are low. Antelope live in open terrain.

Good hunting for mature mule deer takes place in parts of this unit. Many antelope big enough to qualify for the Nevada record book have been taken

Terrain

Parts of the Shawave Mountains and the Selenite, Seen Troughs, Truckee and Trinity ranges are steep. The rest of the landscape is relatively mild or flat.

  • Roughly 2,618 square miles

  • 78.4% public land

  • Elevations from 5,000-7,700 feet

Desert brush dominates with intermittent stands of junipers, aspens and mountain mahoganies in the mountains, particularly in the Seven Trough and Selenite ranges. Low desert plants grow in playa areas.

Widely public land. Some private land is near Lovelock along Interstate 80 and in central Granite Springs Valley. You can drive to most places, but little vehicle access is provided to reach the high parts of the Selenite Range, Seven Troughs Range, Truckee Range and Shawave Mountains. Interstate 80 is the best way to reach the southern part of the unit. State Route 447 is the best way to reach the western side. Jungo Road accesses the northe, while Seven Troughs Road access the east. Various primitive roads that branch from each of these primary routes provide access to specific areas. Some places can be reached only by hikers or horseback riders. Roads to Black Rock Desert are crowded in late August and early September due to the annual Burning Man event.

Carry plenty of supplies, food, water and spare tires. Motels are in Gerlach in the northwest corner of the unit, Lovelock near the southeastern corner, and Fernley at the southwest corner. Hunters can get supplies in those towns as well as in Wadsworth and Nixon. Hunters can camp almost anywhere on public land, including scenic places at Summit Lake.
