On The Ground

With Winnemucca at the southeast corner, this mostly public unit is largely flat desert but has hills and mountains as high as 9,000 feet. Road access is good except for two wilderness areas in the Jackson Mountains. Mule deer, antelope and California bighorn sheep are hunted here.

This is a good area to hunt California bighorn sheep.

Terrain

The Jackson Mountains, Blue Mountain, and the Slumbering, Krum, Jungo and Bloody Run hills are steep in places. Most of the remaining land is flat or mildly steep.

  • Roughly 1,705 square miles

  • 81.3% public land

  • Elevations from 4,100-9,000 feet

Sagebrush and low desert plants covers most of the unit with junipers in the mountains and some hills. Mahoganies and small pockets of aspens grow in the Jackson Mountains and the Bloody Run Hills. Dry lake beds and dunes are mostly barren.

Most of the southeast third of the unit is private and state land in a checkerboard pattern. Other private parcels are in Desert and Silver State Valleys. Vehicle access is good in most of the unit except in parts of the Jackson St. Mountains, particularly the North and South Jackson Mountain wilderness areas, where motors are banned. Major travel routes include Jungo Road, U.S. Route 95, Country Road 140, and a road that parallels the western side of the Jackson Mountains. These routes also serve as the unit boundaries. Bottle Creek Ranch Road leads into Desert Valley, while Sand Pass Road reaches Silver State Valley. Numerous primitive routes branching from these primary routes provide access to most regions. Jungo Road might be congested from late August through early September due to the annual Burning Man event in the unit to the west.

Carry plenty of supplies, food, water and spare tires. The closest lodging is in Winnemucca and Denio Junction to the north. Hunters may camp almost anywhere on public land.
