This large unit is found in the west central portion of the state and lies along the Wyoming state line. Excellent genetics and bulls are found in this unit, if hunters have access to land they are on. Public lands are a commodity here, but some options do exist. For the most part, most elk hunting will take place on private lands and because this is a once-in-a-lifetime harvest for residents, many lucky tag holders opt to hire outfitters to ensure private access.

Bulls can grow quite large in this area but the lack of public hunting opportunities can make things tough. Consider hiring an outfitter to ensure private access to lands holding elk.

Most of this area is comprised of private agricultural lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.

Typical prairie grasses and shrubs dominate most of the undeveloped areas. Creek bottoms with see a higher distribution of willows, cottonwoods, and pines. Stands of mature hardwoods will often be found in and around agricultural areas.

Public access is limited in this unit. While elk encounters on public land are limited and hard to count on, there is a decent collection of public lands and lands in the Open Fields and Waters Program located just south of Scottsbluff that have seen some elk killed. Successfully filling a tag can be done on public grounds, but with this being a once-in-a-lifetime harvest, hunters are generally encouraged to seek private access through themselves, by paying trespass fees, or to go through an outfitter.

Modern lodging is available in any of the bigger towns in the unit. Due to the nature of this hunt and many tag holders going with an outfitter, most lodging and accommodations are generally taken care of.
