This elk unit is found in the central part of the state and features a healthy population of elk and a varied offering of terrain types. There are many scattered state parcels and a large wildlife refuge in the western part of the unit. Some other opportunities such as lands in the Open Fields And Waters Program lands and wildlife management areas are also available for public access.

Compared to other units, lower numbers of elk have been taken here. Most elk have been harvested in the sandhills country north of highway 2. Highly recommend hiring an outiftter due to the lack of public land and overall elk numbers.

The majority of his unit is comprised of undeveloped lands that are reminiscent of sand hills country. Elk in the past have been taken in the northern portion. Most of this unit is set up for supporting cattle operations. Despite the greater variation in terrain outside of the ag areas, hunters will encounter minimal difficulty in navigating nearly all of this unit.

The majority of the this area is composed of rolling hills covered in prarie grasses and shrubs. Many pocket lake and ponds dot the landscape and provide marshy conditions in their vicinity.

Hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. While there are some scattered state-owned parcels, hunters can also explore wildlife management areas and lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters Program for additional access opportunities. It is highly recommended to look into available outfitters to get the full benefit from this tag.

Thedford, Ellsworth, Hyannis and Lakeside are your bigger towns that run along highway 2. There are smaller towns scattered throughout where finding gas and groceries won't be an issue. RV parks and campgrounds are available as well.
