Located against the Wyoming and Colorado borders, this unit holds amazing whitetail deer populations and can offer some great hunting experiences. But like most of the state, the biggest issue finding ground to hunt. Aside from the massive amounts of private land, you can still find Conservation Partner Lands and Open Fields and Waters program lands for hunting access. It would be wise to do your research and secure a good place to hunt, before getting a tag.
With the lack of public land opportunities hunters might have a hard time with the limited access in this unit. Securing permission for private ground might be worth looking into.
Most of this area is comprised of private agricultural lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.
The majority of this region comprises agricultural crop lands, interspersed with scattered stands of mature hardwoods. Ground cover thrives within these wooded areas, creating prime deer habitat. Numerous creeks, rivers, and reservoirs dot the landscape.
Given the scarcity of public lands, hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. While there are some scattered state-owned parcels, hunters can also explore wildlife management areas and lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters Program for additional access opportunities. I-80 spans the southern edge of this unit, from east to west, while highway 92 makes up the northern border. There's no shortage of roads to get you through this entire unit. Numerous highways and country roads pretty much checkerboard the whole unit. Public lands are scattered and checker-boarded throughout the unit. Most of these are square sections but there are some big pieces available in the northwest corner just south of Scottsbluff. Additionally, there is a great collection Open Fields and Waters lands found in this unit. These are distributed fairly evenly but are most porevelant in the western half of the unit.
Along the southern edge of the unit lies I-80 which will give you all the amenities that you'd need. Hotels, gas stations and grocery stores can be found in Chappell, Sidney, Kimball and Pine Bluffs. Along the northern edge, you have Henry, Scottsbluff, Bridgeport and Oshkosh that will provide the same. Campgrounds can be found along both routes as well. So once you nail down a place to hunt, you should be able to find the appropriate lodging near by.
