This large unit is found on the western side of the state and is home to a healthy population of deer. It is almost split in half by interstate 80, where you'll find mostly rangeland on the north half and ag fields in the southern half. Public lands are somewhat limited here, but there are many parcels of lands enrolled in the Open Fields And Waters Program that can be an awesome opportunity for hunters to check into.
Public land is very limited in this unit but a large number of properties are enrolled into the Open Fields And Waters Program which can provide some great opportunities.
Most of this area is comprised of private lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. Much of the private land is split between being developed for agricultural purposed, or being undeveloped and composed of natural rolling grasslands. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.
This unit sees a healthy distribution of lands that are developed for agricultural use and lands that are undeveloped and mostly comprised of rolling grasslands and timbered bottoms and draws.
I-80 splits this unit in half from east to west, so getting anywhere within the unit is fairly simple. Not to mention the numerous county roads. Given the scarcity of public lands, hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. While there are some scattered state-owned parcels, hunters can also explore wildlife management areas and lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters Program for additional access opportunities. These lands are spread throughout the unit but there are some serious chunks that are worth looking into. The southeast corner of the unit had some big collections of Open fields and waters lands in areas that are very conducive to spot and stalk hunting. There are also some very large chunks of accessible ground in the northwest corner just north of the town of Sarben. And lastly, there is a large collection of scattered lands enrolled in this program on the western edge of the unit. In all, public hunting opportunities here are great.
Interstate 80 splits the middle of this unit and with that comes quite a few big cities where all major amenities are found. Ogallala, Sutherland, North Platte and Gothenburg will have your groceries, fuel and hotels. There are a handful of towns, north and south of the 80 that will provide you with the same. If you plan to bring a trailer and camp, you will find plenty of RV parks that span the I-80 as well.
