Located along the western side of the state, bordering Wyoming, this expansive unit offers limited access to public lands. Despite this challenge, hunters who are willing to invest time in thorough e-scouting and exploration can uncover rewarding hunting opportunities. The landscape here varies, from rugged terrain to more accessible areas, providing a diverse hunting experience that appeals to those seeking both challenge and potential for success in their hunts.
With limited public access opportunities hunters will need to stay flexible throughout and hunt and have a solid e-scouting plan in place.
Most of this area is composed of a rolling prairie landscape. Agricultural areas dot the central portion of the area but most of this unit is untouched and can provide some excellent hunting opportunities. Many creek beds wind themselves through the landscape create breaks in the terrain that are excellent for spot and stalk adventures.
Typical prairie grasses and shrubs dominate most of the undeveloped areas. Creek bottoms with see a higher distribution of willows and cottonwoods. Stands of mature hardwoods will often be found in and around agricultural areas.
Given the scarcity of public lands, hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. While there are some scattered state-owned parcels, hunters can also explore wildlife management areas and lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters Program for additional access opportunities. These property types are spread out sparsely throughout the unit but some of the bigger pieces of huntable land will be found in the areas around Hemingford and Alliance. State lands are spread out across the southern and western halves of the unit, but these are widely spaced about and generally smaller sections.
Alliance is found in the central part of the unit and acts as a main hub with many roads dispersing from this location. Modern options for loading and groceries can also be found here. Highway 26/92 runs along the southern edge of the unit and provides even more access to accommodations. Additionally, some public campsites are available. Sporting goods can be found through the area with some of the best selections generally being found in the larger cities.
