This unit is located centrally within the state and boasts excellent deer habitat. Public lands are extremely limited, with only a few accessible properties. Generally, hunters focused solely on public land hunting will find very little opportunity here. Private lands will hold some of the best chances for success, and deer size, and several different terrain types are available here for hunters of all backgrounds and aspriations.
With very little public access opportunities hunters in this unit need to have private lands secured.
Most of this area is comprised of private lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. This unit does have a fair extent of undeveloped lands, particularly in the west, that can be great for spot and stalk hunting. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.
The majority of this region comprises agricultural crop lands, interspersed with scattered stands of mature hardwoods. Ground cover thrives within these wooded areas, creating prime deer habitat. Numerous creeks, rivers, and reservoirs dot the landscape. The western half of the unit is primarily composed of rolling grasslands with prairie grasses and sage brush.
Very little can be found here in the way of public access, even through the Public Lands and Waters program. Success can be found on public lands but, in general, the best odds for success will be found on private lands. A few sections of state lands are found in the northeast corner of the unit but also in the north central portion just west of the town of Taylor. Along with that, some of the most notable pieces of Open Fields and Waters lands will also be found in the north central portion of the unit as well.
The bigger towns and cities in the area will be found along the southern half of the unit while the northern half remains largely undeveloped. Hunters will find hotels, motels, and rental properties scattered throughout the unit. Additionally, some public campsites are available unit wide. Sporting goods can be found through the area with some of the best selections generally being found in the larger cities.
