This unit is located centrally within the state and boasts excellent deer habitat. Public lands are extremely limited but there are some lands available for public access that can lead to success. In general, while public success is possible, the sporadic nature of these opportunities can make this a difficult unit for hunters looking to get it done on their own.
With limited public access options hunters will need to be flexible and have a great e-scouting plan going into the hunt.
Most of this area is comprised of private lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. This unit does have a fair extent of undeveloped lands, particularly in the west, that can be great for spot and stalk hunting. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.
The majority of this region comprises agricultural crop lands, interspersed with scattered stands of mature hardwoods. Ground cover thrives within these wooded areas, creating prime deer habitat. Numerous creeks, rivers, and reservoirs dot the landscape.
The vast majority of this unit is composed of private lands and locating areas for public access can be difficult. There is a small collection of state owned lands that are spread throughout the area but some of these are centered around the town of Genoa to the east and there is also a large piece in the west just outside of Loup City. Lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters program are also spread throughout the unit and can provide additional access options.
There are some larger cities located in the unit including Columbus to the east and Grand Island to the west. Hunters will find hotels, motels, and rental properties scattered throughout the unit in many other smaller towns and communities. Additionally, some public campsites are available unit wide. Sporting goods can be found through the area with some of the best selections generally being found in the larger cities.
