Located on the far eastern border of the state, just south of Sioux City, this expansive area harbors a substantial deer population. However, the scarcity of public hunting access poses a significant challenge for hunters. Some other opportunities such as lands in the Open Fields And Waters Program lands and wildlife management areas are also available for public access.

With the lack of public land opportunities hunters can really struggle here without first securing private access.

Most of this area is comprised of private agricultural lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.

The majority of this region comprises agricultural crop lands, interspersed with scattered stands of mature hardwoods. Ground cover thrives within these wooded areas, creating prime deer habitat. Numerous creeks, rivers, and reservoirs dot the landscape.

Given the scarcity of public lands, hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. While there are some scattered state-owned parcels, hunters can also explore wildlife management areas and lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters Program for additional access opportunities. These types of properties are still limited in this unit by comparison, but some opportunities do exist. Public access options will be spread thinly through the unit but some of the larger and more notable pieces of land can be found on the western side of the unit in the vicinity of the town of Norfolk.

Cities and towns can be found all throughout the unit with one of the biggest, Norfolk, being located in the center of the area. Hunters will find hotels, motels, and rental properties scattered throughout these cities, towns, and communities. Additionally, many public campsites are available unit wide. Sporting goods can be found throughout the area with some of the best selections generally being found in the larger cities.
