Located in the southeastern part of the state, this unit sits just south of the bustling city of Lincoln. Renowned for its robust deer populations, this area offers exceptional hunting opportunities, especially for bucks. While public lands are scarce, hunters can still capitalize on various non-traditional access options, including Open Fields and Waters Program lands and wildlife management areas.
Private lands will pose the biggest hurdle for hunters here. Securing private access will be best but hunters who do their research can find great public hunting options.
Most of this area is comprised of private agricultural lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.
The majority of this region comprises agricultural crop lands, interspersed with scattered stands of mature hardwoods. Ground cover thrives within these wooded areas, creating prime deer habitat. Numerous creeks, rivers, and reservoirs dot the landscape.
Given the scarcity of public lands, hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. While there are some scattered state-owned parcels, hunters can also explore wildlife management areas and lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters Program for additional access opportunities. These lands are spread out fairly evenly across the unit but there are some bigger collections near the towns of Western and Crab Orchard. This unit is one of the top units in the state when it comes to record book entries of Whitetail deer. Entries have been recorded throughout the unit but some of the more prevalent areas would include Gage, Lancaster, Otoe, and Saline counties.
Lincoln is located in the north central portion of the unit and provides access to many lodging, grocery, and gear options. Outside of Lincoln, hunters will find hotels, motels, and rental properties scattered throughout the unit in many small towns and communities. Additionally, many public campsites are available unit wide. Sporting goods can be found through the area with some of the best selections generally being found in the larger cities.
