This large district is found in southwestern Montana near the Idaho border. This area is largely open prairie grounds with four distinct mountain ranges rising up from the valley floors. Within the islands of mountains, hunters will find plenty of roadless country, although these areas are typically frequented by horseback hunters. Physically accessing sheep country, particularly during the early season, can be tough and physical conditioning can play a large role in success.
This area does not typically produce giant rams but it does offer a unique backcountry experience not normally found in surrounding areas.
With large sprawling prairie lands dominating most fo the unit it can become easy to be lulled in a false sense of what this area has to offer. Within the vast prairie lie four distinct islands of mountains complete with jagged peaks, daunting summits, and plenty of backcountry. These mountains areas foster heavy forest growth with many of the highest elevation areas being comprised of open meadows of grass, sage, and rock fields.
The riparian areas adjacent to the streams are a mix of cottonwood and willows. The hills adjacent are covered in grass and sagebrush. Above the open grassland ridges starts the conifer forest of fir and pines, scattered throughout are open parks and hillsides. Many of the peaks are rocky with sub alpine grasses and forbs.
Numerous trails can be found throughout the scattered mountain ranges although the deepest areas will need to be accessed by foot or by livestock. Many rural roads can be found leading hunters to large trailheads and other access points.
There are a few options for modern lodging near Virginia City on the northern end of the unit but hunters will likely need to resort to primitive camping when hunting this unit. Very few sporting goods or grocery options will be found within the unit and these needs are best met prior to leaving for the hunt.
