On The Ground

This district is located in southwest Montana and was historically known to produce some giant rams. This district is commonly known as the Anaconda area and it surrounds the town of Anaconda in the Flint Creek Range. The sheep are generally located on National Forest, but occasionally there are parcels of private land that can block some access. It is a mountainous area with numerous peaks, several lakes and lots of timber.

Historically this district was known for having great rams, but the sheep has struggled in recent years. The downward trend seems to have leveled off for now.

Terrain

This district is mountainous with numerous peaks and ridges scattered throughout. There are quite a few lakes, lots of basins and creek drainages. It is difficult glassing and the sheep are in the timber a lot of the time even though there are a lot of open ridges and rocky faces. There are a lot less sheep so finding the rams can be difficult. The district is split by the highway from Anaconda to Georgetown Lake. To the north is the Flint Creek Range and to the south is the Mount Haggin area.

  • Roughly 412 square miles

  • 51% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,700 - 9,600 feet

There are many open ridges, faces and meadows throughout the entire district. There are a lot of timber covered mountains made up of spruce, fir and pine. The upper basins are sub alpine and are a mixture of grass and forbs. There are some avalanche chutes that have stunted conifers and are quite lush adjacent to the timbered slopes that are used by the sheep throughout the summer and early fall.

Highway 1 runs through the middle of the district from east to west. There are several Forest Service roads into the district off of Highway 1 and trails throughout the district to the north. The Mount Haggin area on the south is more remote with less trails. Some of the sheep habitat is blocked by private lands and the sheep can be found on private land at times.

There are numerous places to camp throughout this district. It is possible to camp at the trailheads and day hunt this district or backpack into some of the remote areas and camp in sheep country at a lake that has fish in it. It is also possible to stay at a motel in Anaconda and drive to the district and day hunt. Georgetown Lake is in the district and has campgrounds as well as good fishing. Anaconda has gas, motels and food.
