On The Ground
Located near the confluence of the Clark Fork River and the Flathead River, this district is a scenic and fun place to hunt sheep.
This district has a very healthy sheep herd with a few mature rams. In the last few years there have been a handful of great rams harvested.
Terrain
Terrain will vary from the upper portions of the district being over 6,000 feet in elevation and more heavily timbered, to the lower portion having more rocky faces. The Flathead Indian reservation will border the district to the north and east sides. The Clark Fork River and Flathead River make up the southern district boundary, terrain is fairly steep and rocky just above the river.
Roughly 31 square miles
53.2% public land
Elevations from 2,450-6,250 feet
Vegetation
The sheep will spend their summers at higher elevations which consist of large Douglas fir, ponderosa pines and grassy slopes. The middle elevations consist of open faced rock slopes with grass and some dense pocket of Douglas fir. During the rut sheep can be found closer to the river, which consists of open rocky faces, shale slides, grass meadows and occasional pockets of timber.
Access
The Sheep will remain in the upper portions of the district during September and the first parts of October. Later in season rams will make their way to lower elevations to rut, using a boat or glassing from the highway, you can cover the majority of the district. Access can be gained from some landowners along the highway and some require an access fee, but there is a lot of public access from the river.
A boat is highly recommended, gives good access to the district
Camping and Lodging
Most hunters will stay in Plains, this small town is used to accommodating hunters. Plains has a couple small hotels that book up early during hunting season. They also have a grocery store, gas stations and restaurants. Another option for lodging is Quinn’s hot springs which is located off highway 135 and they provide cabin rentals.
