On The Ground
This district is located in northwest Montana in the Whitefish Mountains. It has some very remote and rugged terrain with a sheep population that crosses from Canada to Montana regularly. A high hunter success and low amount of permits will give hunters a good experience when looking for sheep.
This district will physically challenge a hunter early in the season. Late in the season there are areas to hunt if a hunter wishes to look for sheep that are more easily accessible. Lots of Forest Service land and very limited permits, this district is a great experience and a quality hunt.
Terrain
Within the Kootenai National Forest, this area has many remote mountain trails, high rocky basins and limited Forest Service roads that provide a remote hunting experience. Sheep early in the season and throughout the summer can be found in the high mountain basins, and move to more accessible areas later in the season. Some of the higher peaks will be over 7,500 feet, with very vertical cliff and shale slopes. It is not uncommon for the sheep to move between Canada and Montana on a regular basis.

Vegetation
The highest elevations will have limited vegetation, mostly rock and shale slopes with some pockets of grass and subalpine fir. As you move down in elevation vegetation increases with pockets of subalpine fir, Douglas fir, grand fir, lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, Larch and some very thick pockets of alder. The creek bottoms and lower elevations will have cedar, larch and a mixed variety of understory brush.
Access
Public access is very good with the majority of the district being on National Forest land. Late in the season snow can limit access to the district. Trail systems will get you into main drainages, but often getting off of the trails to access sheep country is necessary.
Camping and Lodging
Most hunters that hunt this district early in the season will spike out while hunting, due to the remoteness of the area. Eureka would provide the best lodging accommodations, this town is small but used to hunters, and has a grocery store, gas stations and some hotels. Camping is also an option, there are many dispersed campsites and several established sites throughout the district.
