Quick Tips

  • Be prepared for a remote wilderness type of hunt
  • Bring good optics, good camping gear, and clothing for different weather conditions and have a good plan for getting your trophy out. A GPS will come in handy
  • You will be in known grizzly bear country, so hunt with a buddy and pack bear spray

On The Ground

This unit is located in north central Montana with the northern boundary being the Blackfoot Indian Reservation. Much of the unit is in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and most of the western boundary is the Sun River Game Preserve. This unit is all along the east front of the Rocky Mountains.

This unit has a moose population that is increasing and this is only the second year that moose tags have been offered. There is only one either sex tag for this unit. This unit is capable of producing bulls to the mid 40”. Moose are widely scattered in the unit.

Terrain

This is some big unique impressive country. The mountains rise sharply up out of the adjoining prairie. Many of the mountains are sheer rock reefs running for miles and cut deeply by the watersheds that drain them. This is steep rugged backcountry hunt.

  • Roughly 580 square miles

  • 46.8% public land

  • Elevations from 4,000-8,800 feet

Some moose inhabit the private creek and river bottoms, out away from the mountain and in the foothills and some live in the deep drainages of forest on public ground. The creeks and rivers have cottonwoods, willows, and related riparian species. The mountains are covered with pine, spruce and fir trees. There are a lot of open grassy meadows and adjacent good stands of aspens and willows.

Highway 89 and 287 on the east and a highway on the south leading you up to Gibson Reservoir that has numerous trailheads into the wilderness. Canyon Road takes you into the very heart of the unit and to forest trails also. Approximately 50% of the moose live on private land and stay there and you will not get permission on most of this private land.

  • ATVs will not be useful but horses would be very useful

  • Be in good physical condition, the mountains are steep and the only way to access most of it is on foot or horseback

  • Highways 89 and 287 will get you access to all of this unit

There are numerous places to camp in the unit on public ground and there are several campgrounds at the trailheads. Choteau and Augusta have gas, food and motels. There are several large reservoirs in this unit with good fishing and camping.
