Quick Tips

  • Tire chains late in the season dependent on snow accumulation
  • If camping maintain a clean camp area, bears in the area
  • Due to the dense forest cover, calling is an effective tactic

On The Ground

This unit is found in western Montana and along the famous Clark Fork River. Decent moose populations can be found here but locating them can be tough due to the dense vegetation. Hunters will find plenty of access options thanks to a plethora of public land.

This district is very large with lots of public access. The moose population is smaller and very dispersed. A realistic expectation would be a bull near 40 inches wide, but some bulls do exceed this.

Terrain

Terrain will vary from high subalpine fir meadows, to lower alder brush fields and thick forests. There are numerous Forest Service trails, and gated logging roads which will provide good access to the district. Harvested timber districts, and older burn scars will provide some of the larger openings for hunting. Most mountains are heavily timbered with very steep slopes.

  • Roughly 442 square miles

  • 82.8% public land

  • Elevations from 2,400-7,250 feet

In the higher elevations there will be some subalpine meadows, and high altitude lakes. Mid elevations to the valleys will have dense forest cover from both trees and brush. Many streams do exist and generally large alder fields surround these water sources.

There are many well maintained logging roads throughout the district. There are some Forest Service trails, but many gated logging roads providing access to some of the more remote areas. Later in the season snow can limit travel. In the valleys and some of the major creek and river bottoms there will be private land.

Thompson Falls and Plains are the nearest towns. Both towns have hotels, but they do fill up quickly during hunting season, so book early. These towns also provide gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and a Forest Service work center located in Plains for access to maps. Camping is allowed on public lands, and there are many established campgrounds and a number of dispersed campsites located throughout the district.
