Quick Tips

  • Tire chains late in the season dependent on snow accumulation
  • If camping, maintain a clean camp area, bears in the area
  • Due to the dense forest cover, calling is an effective tactic

On The Ground

This unit is located in western Montana and along the Idaho state line. Decent moose densities are found here but the vegetation cover is immense and locating them can be a chore. Very few glassing opportunities will be found here with the exception of timber cuts, old burns, and some open creek bottoms. This area will require patience and hard hunting but the payoff can be great.

A realistic expectation would be finding a bull near the 40 inch mark, with some bulls exceeding 45 inches. During general deer and elk season there will be high hunting pressure, which can cause some frustration. This district is very large with isolated population densities of moose, so hunters will want to give themselves plenty of time to hunt this district.

Terrain

Terrain will vary from high subalpine fir meadows, to lower alder brush fields and thick forests. There are numerous walk-in areas, and gated roads closed to motorized vehicles, along with many logging roads that are open to motorized use. Harvested timber districts, and older burn scars will provide some of the larger openings in the district.

  • Roughly 383 square miles

  • 79.5% public land

  • Elevations from 2,175–6,600 feet

In the higher elevations there will be some subalpine meadows, and high altitude lakes. Mid elevations to the valleys there is dense forest cover from both trees and brush. Many streams do exist and generally large alder fields surround these water sources. Cross country travel can be very difficult at times due to the underbrush.

There are many well maintained logging roads throughout the district. There are some Forest Service trails, but many gated logging roads providing access to some of the more remote areas. Later in the season snow can inhibit travel. In the valleys and some of the major creek and river bottoms there will be private land.

Trout Creek is the nearest town to the center of the district. Trout Creek is small but is used to accommodating hunters, and provides some lodging and gas stations. Thompson Falls is the nearest town to the southwestern edge of the district, and another option for lodging, gas stations and a grocery store.
