On The Ground

This hunting district is situated west of Kalispell and Whitefish, within large portions of Flathead National Forest and Stillwater State Forest. Large sections of old clear cuts make great habitat for a huntable moose population. This are will get hunted heavily for deer and elk with it's close proximity to Kalispell. This can cause moose to be somewhat more cautious when near roads but can also be a benefit as most hunters are generally forthcoming with any information of moose sightings.

It is tough to draw a limited license but those who do draw each year realize that an opportunity for a B&C bull is possible. Freezing weather can make hunting in November difficult, but it also means the potential of having a covering of tracking snow.

Terrain

Most of this area heavily timbered with the only real glassing opportunities being found in the many timber cuts. Many roads, both open and gated, are found throughout the unit and provide for easy access into most of the area. The amount of roads here will really elminate the need for a lot of cross country travel but hunters should be prepared for that if needed.

  • Roughly 368 square miles

  • 53.7% public land

  • Elevations from 2,800-6,400 feet

Closer to river valleys and towns, hunters will find irrigated pivots and broad sections of farmlands. Cottonwoods and willows line many creek bottoms. Foothills have clusters of mountain shrubs and open grassy meadows. Climbing in elevation mountain slopes has dense stands of ponderosa and lodgepole pine, spruce, fir and groves of mountain maple. Grassy meadows and new growth are found among the clear cut parcels.

A good system of Forest Service roads and trails allow for travel within the National Forest during the hunting season. If there is heavy snow chains and four wheel-drives are recommended. Many closed logging roads in the area make great hiking trails.

Flathead National Forest allows camping in developed campsites and with the National Forest with a 16 day limit of stay. Kalispell and Whitefish offer a wide variety of motels, lodges and bed & breakfasts for the travelling hunter. Cafés and restaurants are plentiful and offer great meals for any budget, Regional medical facilities provide health care and emergency room needs. 24/7gas and diesel fuels are readily available.
