Hunt District 105 is part of the Kootenai National Forest and is found in the northwest part of the state. This area has a healthy distribution of roads, both open and gated, and hunters will find plenty of access options. Moose densities are low here, as with the rest of this area, but some great bulls can still be found. With the exception of some alpine basins, most of this area is heavily forested with dense ground cover. Glassing oipportunites are rare with the exception of a few natural openings and timber cuts.
Smaller densities of moose will be found here but many bulls still reach good sizes. Vegetation and ground cover will the primary limiting factor when it comes to locating bulls, but hunters will have options.
There are numerous gated roads closed to motorized vehicles, along with some logging roads that are open to motorized use. A hunter can expect to hike on gated roads and maintained trail systems. Most openings are timber harvest units, old burn scars and avalanche chutes. The Cabinet Mountain Wilderness is part of this unit and can provide a remote hunting experience. Traveling off-trail or road anywhere in the unit will generally consist of some heavy brush busting anf steep climbs.
The highest elevations will have limited vegetation, mostly rock and shale slopes with some pockets of grass. As you move down in elevation the vegetation increases with high densities of mixed conifers of subalpine fir, douglas fir, grand fir, lodgepole pine, hemlock, spruce, white pine and some very thick pockets of alders. The creek bottoms and lower elevations will have cedar, larch and other mixed conifers with a variety of understory brush.
This district is located within the Kootenai National Forest and provides excellent public access. There are numerous drivable roads within the area along with lots of gated roads as well. Some of the road systems provide long loops that can be driven, preventing having to backtrack. This area also has several scenic trail systems that provide access to some of the more remote areas. Within this area is the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness and it is very remote.
Most hunters in this area will spike out while hunting, due to the remoteness of the area. The nearest towns are Troy and Libby which both provide accommodations for lodging, grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants. Troy is much smaller and will consequently have less options for amemnities.
