On The Ground
Hunt District 700 is located in eastern Montana, in an area also known as the Missouri River Breaks. This hunt district not only offers great hunting opportunities, but breathtaking scenery as well.
People who draw the elk tag consider it their best chance to shoot a giant bull. Elk hunters will have to choose if they want to hunt this area with a bow or a rifle. The archery permit is much easier to draw than a rifle permit. There are also whitetail deer in this district that can be harvested with a general deer tag. Opportunities are mostly limited to private land.
Terrain
The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge borders the perimeter of Fort Peck Lake providing good public access for hunters. Terrain will vary from sagebrush and grass prairies in wide open badlands to deep juniper covered draws. The elevations remain somewhat constant. Game can be found year round at all elevations.
Roughly 2,789 square miles
36.1% public land
Elevations from 2,200-3,300 feet
Vegetation
Some springs, small stock ponds and perennial streams are found in the area, along with the Fort Peck Reservoir. The Musselshell and Missouri River Breaks are characterized by a mixture of juniper and ponderosa pines. Big sagebrush is the dominant shrub, with silver sagebrush, chokecherry and skunkbush common as well.
Access
Access to private land can be an issue, maps showing land ownership will be extremely helpful. There is some accessible BLM and State land. The best access to large chunks of public land will be to hunt the CMR.
Accessing various parts of the CMR by boat can get you away from people
