On The Ground

This district is located in the north central part of the state and encompasses the Bears Paw Mountain Range which lies north of the Missouri River, and south of the town of Havre. The Rocky Boy Indian Reservation lies within the heart of this district and presents some challenges for hunters as well as state game managers. The Bears Paws have become known as some of the top trophy bull elk areas in the state. Giant bulls have been killed in this area and every single year trophy class bulls are pulled from them.

This area is becoming more and more popular for its trophy bulls. The Rocky Boy Reservation poses some challenges as big bulls often hang around the border which causes frustration among hunters. Some of the best hunting in this district is available through booking a hunt with an outfitter or by paying for access.

Terrain

The Bears Paw Mountains make up the bulk of the hunting habitat in this district. This mountain range is rough and remote with few access roads. Long steep timbered ridges run throughout the range. Moderate and flat prairies surround the district.

  • Roughly 2,888 square miles

  • 11.1% public land

  • Elevations from 2,400-6,900 feet

The mountainous portion of this district has ponderosa pine forests with cottonwood and willow choked creek beds and open grassy hillsides. Oak and sagebrush can be found throughout the district in the mountains as well as in the prairies. The lower elevation areas of this district consist of prairie grasses and shrubs, and both irrigated and dryland agriculture.

Public access is not as good in this district, as compared to its sister district 680. This district does still provide some good public land and great Block Management hunting opportunities, but some of the private land hunting is as good as it gets for big bull elk. The Rocky Boy Indian Reservation is off limits for hunters with this tag and presents some access challenges.

  • Block Management Map and maps showing land ownership are a must

There are some options for various styles of hunters in this district depending on your preference. Backcountry style hunting opportunities exist within the Bears Paw Mountains, although private access will likely be required. There are good public camping areas near Havre along with lodging and supplies.
