On The Ground
This hunt district is located east of Billings and south of Roundup. It includes the Bull Mountains north of the Yellowstone River and Pine Ridge south of the Yellowstone River. The area is mostly private land and gaining access can be difficult. It would be wise to obtain permission or book with an outfitter prior to applying for this unit.
Elk populations in this district have been increasing. Mule deer are scattered throughout the district, but their numbers are down. Whitetail numbers are also down and are mainly found along the Yellowstone River and Musselshell River bottoms.
Terrain
This unit has broken terrain with lots of coulees and ridges. Even though they are called the Bull Mountains, they are just a large set of hills. There are sandstone ridges and buttes scattered throughout. The entire unit has lots of elevation changes and cover that make for great stalking opportunities.
Roughly 2,877 square miles
9.9% public land
Elevations from 3,000-4,400 feet
Vegetation
Most of the unit is covered with ponderosa pine trees and a mix of juniper and cedar. Most of the timber is not a dense stand and is great for hunting. The entire unit has numerous grassy clearings throughout the forested areas. The river bottoms and some of the creeks have irrigated agriculture fields adjacent to them. There is dry land farming scattered throughout the unit.
Access
There are paved roads on the west and north boundaries of this unit. Highway 87 and Interstate 90 and 94 run through the unit. Good gravel county roads run throughout the area. Most of the deer and elk reside on private land and access to the private land is difficult. A high percentage of the better ranches are leased to outfitters. There are state sections and some BLM scattered throughout the unit, with a few ranches are in the Block Management Program. Rain can make travel difficult, stay on the gravel roads or pavement if it gets very wet.
ATVs are handy if allowed by the landowner
Camping and Lodging
Billings, Roundup and Hardin have several motels, restaurants and gas stations. There are several campgrounds along the Yellowstone River.
