On The Ground

This Hunt District is located in south central Montana. It is north of Big Timber and south of Harlowton. It takes in the north and east side of the Crazy Mountains. This unit is mostly private land and gaining access can be difficult. It would be wise to obtain permission prior to applying for this unit.

Mule deer are scattered throughout the district, but their numbers are down. Whitetail deer are also down and are mainly found along the creek drainages coming off the Crazy Mountains and along the Yellowstone and Musselshell River bottoms.

Terrain

This unit starts at the top of the Crazy Mountains at 11,200 feet and encompasses all the drainages to the north and the east, from above timberline in mountain goat country down to the prairie. Below timberline there are conifer forest of fir, pine and spruce. The foothills have pines and junipers and are broken terrain. The lower elevations are grasslands and irrigated hayfields adjacent to the streams.

  • Roughly 1,130 square miles

  • 21.9% public land

  • Elevations from 4,000-11,200 feet

Most of the Crazy Mountains are forested from the foothills to timberline. Below the foothills are some large grassy benches extending out into the prairie. There are lots of breaks and buttes in the unit that have pine, juniper and cedars. Most of the creeks have a brush and cottonwood riparian area and have agriculture fields adjacent to them.

Highway 191 on the east and Highway 12 on the north have numerous county roads branching from them that access the unit. Most of the unit is private land and getting permission is very difficult. The National Forest lands are checker boarded with private land and most access is blocked.

  • ATVs are handy if allowed by the landowner

Big Timber and Harlowton have several motels, restaurants and gas stations. There is camping allowed on the National Forest and a campground in Big Timber Canyon.
