On The Ground
Located in central Montana to the east of the Rocky Mountain Front, this district not only offers great hunting opportunities but breathtaking scenery as well. Hunters have the opportunity to hunt both deer and elk with general tags in both the archery and rifle seasons.
This district produces good whitetail bucks. However, most of them are found along the Sun River where there is limited public land. Public land is not easily accessible. Floating the Sun River and hunting islands has been a proven successful tactic.
Terrain
Most of the public land is state Land with some small areas of BLM mixed in. Terrain will vary from sagebrush and grass prairies within wide-open basins to irrigated farm fields. The elevations remain somewhat constant, and game can be found year round at all elevations.
Roughly 485 square miles
16% public land
Elevations from 3,500–4,800 feet
Vegetation
The eastern portion of the district is dominated by grasslands with some scattered areas of dry land farming. Some of the creeks and rivers have irrigated crops next to them. The winds in this area can be severe, thus most of the grasslands are classified as short grass prairie.
Access
Access to private land can be an issue and you will need a good map and a GPS. Recommended is a GPS with a landowner overlay. There is some accessible BLM and state land.
Camping and Lodging
Lodging, gas and groceries are available in several communities scattered throughout the district. These towns include Augusta, Fairfield, Choteau and Great Falls. These are small towns that are accustomed to catering to hunters. Great Falls has an international airport that most hunters fly into.
