Located in central Montana, Hunt District 412 has all of the Judith Mountain Range, along with the North and South Moccasin Ranges. General License holders may hunt deer, but draw permits must be obtained to hunt elk.

Elk populations are high but it may be difficult to locate them on public lands at times. Mule deer numbers are holding steady. Whitetails have been on the decline due to a recent case of EHD.

In the higher elevations terrain consists of timbered scree slopes mixed with open grassy knobs. Terrain can be steep in places but for the most part is passable. The unit is a mix of BLM, state and private land that makes up the majority of the foothills and rolling plains.

Few streams exist and generally water is located in ponds and low creeks on private land which surrounds the mountain range. Some of the tree species that do exist throughout the unit are Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, aspen, cottonwood, ponderosa pine and many different species of brush.

Most of this unit is private land with the largest parcels of public being the Judith Mountain Range. Most of this area can be day hunted from different access points. With a little effort access may be given from local ranch owners for both hunting permission and access to privately locked public lands. A GPS with landownership overlay is highly recommended as there is little distinction between private and public lands.

Lewistown, Grass Range and Roy are the communities that are near the unit. Lewistown has a couple small hotels but they fill up quickly during hunting season, so book early. It also has a large RV/campground. Roy and Grass Range offer Small RV/campgrounds. These three communities provide gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants. Camping is allowed on public lands, and there are a few dispersed campsites located throughout the unit.
