On The Ground

This smaller district, found just northeast of Great Falls, is river breaks country and for the most part nearly all private. This area has very few elk, though solid mule deer and whitetail can be found with private land access. It's proximity to other quality elk districts lends the possibility of catching some migrating elk very late, but for the most part you won't be in them in this district.

This district produces some of Montana's better general season mule deer, but mainly due to the fact that the majority of the district is privately held and the state ground available isn't always accessible. If you have access and are looking for muleys in the Missouri Breaks this might be worth a look.

Terrain

This is Missouri River Breaks country. While the elevation changes aren't all that dramatic the steepness of the draws will test your stamina if covering numerous draws in a day. Rain can bring your hunt to a screeching halt as this ground turns into a nightmare with the lightest moisture.

  • Roughly 471 square miles

  • 8.5% public land

  • Elevations from 2,600-3,500 feet

This district is nearly completely covered in agriculture or cattle production. Some of the steeper coulees, too rugged to farm, will have sage and grass cover but the most part is dry range.

This district is mostly private ground with minimal access. A couple Black Management Areas offer some access and some ability to get onto the state sections open to public hunting. Without pre-arranged access a hunter would find himself quite disappointed with the options to hunt only in this particular district.

With minimal public access, very little ground is available to camp. On the eastern corner of the district, Fort Benton offers hotels and all other amenities of a small town. Great Falls will give the traveling hunter everything from a very nice hotel to major sporting good stores and restaurants.
