On The Ground

This hunt district is located in north central Montana. Nearly all ground is farmed with wheat and other dry land farming crops common to Montana. There is very little topography other than some breaks country found along major river and creek routes.

This unit isn't really a popular choice for most deer hunters as those hunting up in this part of the state stick to the Sweetgrass Hills district or higher up on the Marias River. Both mule deer and whitetail can be found throughout this district. There is limited access and virtually no elk. The minimal pressure is about the best thing to say about this district. The key to success in this area generally comes down to scouting.

Terrain

This is farm country. Some river breaks are available but the majority is in crop production including much of the state ground under lease and is generally flat. Major topography is nonexistent.

  • Roughly 2,266 square miles

  • 8.1% public land

  • Elevations range from 3,000-4,000 feet

Wheat and barley are your main types of vegetation. On CRP or unleased state ground native and invasive grasses dominate. Some sagebrush is present but in very light coverage.

Very little BLM and no Forest Service land exists within this unit. State land is scattered throughout but large tracts are minimal with most being small parcels. Identifying state land can be difficult as most of it is leased or in crop production. Block Management areas are available but may change year to year. Numerous county roads checkerboard nearly all of the unit.

Conrad, Fort Benton, Fairfield, Great Falls and Chouteau all offer lodging and amenities. Camping is available on state ground in some places. Campgrounds are available at Freezeout Lake with KOA's available at a few of the mentioned towns above.
