On The Ground
This district is located directly north of Helena, west of the Missouri River and east of Highway 279. This area is comprised mainly of private land, most of which is available to hunters through Montana’s Block Management Program. This area has some urban development that is affecting habitat. Elk mostly use this area as a winter range while deer and antelope can be found here year round throughout the district.
This area is a great example of how Block Management can be a great tool to provide great hunting opportunities to the public on private land. Much of the area around Baldy Mountain is prime habitat and open to hunting through the Block Management Program. This area receives a ton of pressure from local hunters based in Helena.
Terrain
This district begins in the foothills on both sides of I-15 just north of Helena and slowly rises north to the Continental Divide. The southern portion of the district is moderately rough foothill and shallow mountain country. The north and eastern portions of the district consist of rugged and steep mountains with deep timbered canyons.
Roughly 291 square miles
28.4% public land
Elevations from 3,700-7,000 feet
Vegetation
In the north and east of this district along the Continental Divide and the Missouri River you’ll find typical mountain habitat of thick pine and fir forests with wild berry bushes, buck brush and willow creek beds intermixed throughout. The lower country to the south is rolling plains prairie habitat with scattered pine timber in the foothills primarily used for cattle grazing. Some agriculture does exist in the form of dry ground hay and irrigated crops.
Access
Considering this district is mostly private land, access is pretty good. Block Management provides the bulk of public access to hunting in this district. Forest Service, state and BLM land exist in the mountains to the north and east of the district.
Block Management Map is very helpful
