On The Ground
This unit is located in Southwest Montana and lies just outside of the town of Twin Bridges. Good animal populations are found here but this unit is largely private lands and public lands hunters may struggle to find unpressured areas. Most of this area is composed of typical open prairie type lands with the exception of the Ruby Range which does have some heavily timbered sloped.
Very few bulls reach old age in this area due to the high number of rifle hunters, but some do slip through the cracks long enough to reach trophy quality size.
Terrain
The Ruby Mountains are a fairly gentle and rolling mountain range surrounded by grassy foothills that give way to cattle pastures and croplands lining the river bottoms. Roads and trails are present throughout the area making for easy travel.
Roughly 527 square miles
45% public land
Elevations from 5,500-9,000 feet
Vegetation
Lower to mid-elevation areas will be composed of small timber patchers and large flats and rolling ridges of prairie grass and sage. Most of the higher elevation areas will be primarily dominated by ponderosa pine, douglas fir, and red fir.
Access
Most of this area is private land and hunters may struggle for access in the lower areas. Scattered chunks of public land are available, though. Most of the higher elevation areas in the Ruby's are public land and hunters can find some roadless sections there.
Camping and Lodging
Twin Bridges located on the north end of the unit does provide some modern lodging options along with Dillon to the south. Many hunters will opt for primitive camps throughout the unit on public lands.
