On The Ground

This unit is located in the beautiful Paradise Valley and has the Yellowstone River as its east boundary. There is some great backcountry hunting opportunities, with very scenic views. Deer and elk hunting can be done with a general license.

This hunting district has some very rugged and steep terrain in the higher elevations. The southern end of the hunting district relies heavily on a migratory elk herd from Yellowstone National Park. The whitetail deer are typically on private land in the valley. Mule deer live from the valley floor to the highest peaks, but their numbers are very low.

Terrain

This unit has some very steep remote mountains with some peaks over 10,000. There have been some fires over the past decade, so burn scars are scattered throughout the unit. Some areas have very thick downfall, and heavy timber, but there are lots of open ridges and subalpine meadows which provide good areas for glassing.

  • Roughly 525 square miles

  • 39.9% public land

  • Elevations from 4,500-10,300 feet

Some of the higher elevations are subalpine meadows with limited timber. Lower in elevation there is more timber, mainly Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine and subalpine fir with some aspen pockets in the creek bottoms. Mid elevations to the valley floor mainly consists of juniper, Douglas fir and some open grass slopes mixed with pockets of sagebrush.

Horses are recommended in order to get into some of the more remote areas of the unit. Limited road access, with most hunting done on foot or with stock. Access to public land is good with lots of National Forest trailheads.

  • ATVs are not necessary

  • Backcountry hunting over 5 miles from trailheads is very common

If hunting the north end of the unit Livingston has the best accommodations providing lodging, restaurants and gas stations. If hunting the southern end of the unit Chico Hot springs would provide luxurious accommodations, developed hot springs, lodging and restaurants.
