On The Ground
Located in the western part of the state, this tiny unit covers the Blackfoot–Clearwater Wildlife Management Area. It is strictly regulated for all species. Knowing the regulations and what you can and cannot hunt is key.
The district is a large wintering ground for elk, mule deer and whitetail. Game populations are stable throughout the year but really increase as snows pile in.
Terrain
This unit is very small. The Northern half is made up of large rolling mountains covered in timber with big open parks and meadows found throughout. The southern part of the unit was partially burned and it gradually opens up into smaller foothills heading right into several large flats.
Roughly 40 square miles
88.2% public land
Elevations from 4,000–5,500 feet
Vegetation
The forest has been managed very well, to ensure excellent forage for wintering animals. Forests in this area are made up of lodgepole, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. The rolling hills and flats are made up of sagebrush and natural grasses.
Access
There is no better publicly accessible unit. There are quite a few main roads that completely surround the entire unit, with several smaller logging roads that branch off.
Walk in only except on designated roads
Salmon Lake, Boyd Mountain and Blanchard Flats are great access points
Highway 83, 200 and Woodworth road are your main roads
Camping and Lodging
Clearwater is the nearest location with gas, food and a single small hotel. Missoula or Seeley Lake will be your closest town offering better lodging, gas and food options. Camping is allowed on all National Forest land for up to 14 days in one location. There are also a few designated camp sights around the unit.
Salmon Lake, Harpers Lake, Russell Gates are public campgrounds
