On The Ground

This area is located in the western part of the state, North West of Missoula. Hunters have the opportunity to hunt elk and deer during the same season with general licenses.

This area has a lot of public land hunting. Elk can be found all throughout the hunting district. Whitetails can be found in good numbers. Mule deer populations are on a small decline, with bigger bucks harder to find.

Terrain

Starting along the steep Idaho Border, giant timbered ridges and creek drainages gradually drop down into the Clark Fork River Drainage. There are lots of smaller timbered ridges and lush creek bottoms that flow down to the valley floor.

  • Roughly 959 square miles

  • 94% public land

  • Elevations from 3,000-7,500 feet

This unit is primarily made up of large expanses of whitebark pine, ponderosa pine and larch forests, with Red Cedar creek bottoms.

This area has good public access by driving along Highway 90. There are lots of Forest Service access roads you can hunt from or drive to some of the many trail heads or old gated logging roads. This unit offers outstanding opportunity for many different styles of hunting.

  • Highway 90 and 12 are main highways

  • Fish Creek, Trout Creek, Dry Creek, Ward Creek and Elk Creek are main roads

Missoula, Superior, and St. Regis all offer several options for lodging, food, gas and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all National Forest land for up to 14 days in one location. There are also a few designated camp sites located throughout the unit.

  • Clearwater Crossing, and Lee Creek are all public campgrounds
