On The Ground

This hunt district is located in the western part of the state, sitting directly North West of Missoula. Hunters have the opportunity to hunt elk and deer during the same season with general licenses.

This area has a lot of public land hunting. Elk can be found all throughout the hunting district. Whitetails can be found in good numbers. Mule deer populations are on a small decline, with bigger bucks harder to find. Hunting pressure can be overwhelming.

Terrain

Starting in the Southeast corner of the unit the massive Nine Mile drainage heads northwest almost all the way through the unit. Both sides of the drainage are made up of short steep ridges covered in thick timber as they drop into Nine Mile Creek. The part of the unit that sits above the Clark Fork River drainage is made up more gradual ridges covered in thick timber and several small burns.

  • Roughly 1045 square miles

  • 72% public land

  • Elevations from 3,000 – 7,500 feet

This unit is primarily made up of large expanses of whitebark pine, ponderosa pine and larch forests, with Red Cedar creek bottoms.

This area has good public access by driving either along Highway 90 or 93. There are lots of Forest Service access roads you can hunt from or drive to some of the many trail heads or old gated logging roads. This unit offers outstanding opportunity for many different styles of hunting.

  • Highway 90 and 93 are main highways

  • Mill Creek, Nine Mile Creek, Nemote Creek and Pardee Creek are main roads

Missoula, Superior, and St. Regis all offer several options for lodging, food, gas and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all National Forest land for up to 14 days in one location. There are also a few designated camp sites located throughout the unit.

  • Quartz Flat, Sloway Creek, and Cascade Creek are all public campgrounds
