On The Ground

Situated just south of Glacier National Park, this unit has some extremely rugged peaks that offer excellent views. Road access is relatively poor due to designated wilderness areas, and most areas are reached only by hiking and horseback.

This unit is perfect for the backcountry hunter looking to get away from the crowds and hunt unpressured animals, but it is an extremely physically challenging hunting district so hunters who are in shape or have access to horses will do better. There is a low number of mule deer, and a high number of wolves and grizzlies.

Terrain

Situated just south of Glacier National Park, this unit has some extremely rugged peaks. Major landmarks include the Middle and South forks of the Flathead River and Hungry Horse Reservoir. Thick pine forests and alders cover much of the land, which ranges from 3,287 feet on the Middle Fork River to 8,705 foot Great Northern Mountain.

  • Roughly 340 square miles

  • 97.8% public land

  • Elevations from 3,200-8,700 feet

This unit is comprised of thick pines and plenty of alders throughout the hunting district. A few open meadows at the head of basins. Dense under brush and Devil’s Club are very common in lower areas near streams.

Most of this hunting district lies within the Great Bear Wilderness where use of motorized vehicles is prohibited. There is a lot of access into the hunting district south of Highway 2. Most people will access the unit from Highway 2 through Forest Service access roads or through trail systems off of Hungry Horse Reservoir to the west of the unit. Private land is located at the lower elevations along the highway.

This unit offers plenty of remote backcountry camping options. West Glacier is your closest major town with fuel services and small hotel options. A few small motels can be found along US Highway 2 like Snowslip Inn, Glacier Meadow RV park and Summit Mountain Lodge. Glacier Meadow RV park is a great option for those people traveling with campers and trailers. There is a USFS cabin, Zips Cabin, that you can rent, but the best option in this unit would be to pack in and camp.
