Quick Tips

  • Focus efforts on gaining permission to hunt private lands

On The Ground

This hunting district is found in northwest montana between the cities of Whitefish and Kalispell. This area is largely comprised of private lands and because of this, access is difficult. If permission can be gained to hunt private lands hunters will be in for great action.

Bear can be found throughout this unit but securing private land will be the shortest route to success.

Terrain

For the most part, this area is nearly flat. Urban developments and agricultural fields cover much of the area though some fantastic river bottom areas are available as well. On the northern end of the unit some small state owned sections of land are present that contain heavily forested areas, though these will see large amounts of hunters as well.

  • 7% public land

  • Elevations range from 3,000-3,900 feet

With this area being heavily developed and dominated by agricultural fields, hunters will encounter a very small mixture of vegetation. Most of the naturally forested areas will be comprised of heavy stands of ponderosa pine with some sporadic patches of tamarack. In the river bottoms, mature stands of cottonwood intermixed with ponderosa will be ever present along with native grasses and bushy plants. Agricultural areas will be diversified between hay, wheat, canola, and alfalfa providing excellent feed for the district’s whitetail population.

With nearly all of the unit being comprised of privately owned lands, hunters will face some serious difficulty in access. On the northern end of the unit and in small areas along the Stillwater River, some state owned sections of land will be encountered though most of the these will be very heavily hunted. Hunters in this unit are urged to contact land owners early in an attempt to gain access to the land before the season starts.

  • Main roads of access will include Highway 93, Highway 2, Highway 35, Highway 206, and Farm to Market Rd

  • Hunter numbers will be very high on any publicly accessible lands

  • Gaining access to private lands will be the best bet for success

With the towns of Kalispell and Whitefish being found along the borders of the unit hunters will have no problem finding lodging options though very little will be found for primitive camping. Groceries and gear needs can also be met in either of these towns.

  • Modern lodging can be found in the town of Whitefish and Kalispell

  • Sporting goods can be purchased in Whitefish and Kalispell

  • Great fishing found on the Stillwater River and Flathead River

  • Glacier Park is located nearby
