On The Ground

Hunt District 703 is a very large area that includes large portions of Dawson, Wibaux, Richland, Prairie and Fallon Counties. Composed of rolling grass and sagebrush ridges, open prairies and scattered breaks. This unit is a great place to get away and enjoy the prairies of eastern Montana.

Over the last several years, eastern Montana's antelope population has been on the decline, this has affected all of the region seven hunting districts. The population is increasing due to reduced doe harvest and mild winters. Private land can be frustrating.

Terrain

Hunt District 703 is very large and has vast expanses of prairie and sagebrush flats, this provides great antelope habitat. Some areas are extremely flat and can make getting close to antelope very difficult.

  • Roughly 5,462 square miles

  • 16.1% public land

  • Elevations from 1,950-2,800 feet

The majority of the unit consists of rolling grass or tilled farm ground mixed with sagebrush ridges, sagebrush flats and scattered breaks. As you near the Yellowstone River, several creeks feed its flow. Along these creek drainages there are pockets of juniper and Ponderosa Pine, with dense cottonwood trees in the creek bottoms.

This unit has a lot of large private ranches located within it. There are some that provide access through Block Management Program and others that allow hunting with permission. There are many small isolated pieces of BLM and state lands. A GPS with a landownership overlay is recommended to help access these parcels.

  • ATVs can be useful

  • Roads can become impassable with any precipitation, know where gravel roads are located

Glendive is located in the center of the district and provides the best accommodations. It has many options for lodging, restaurants, gas, groceries and a sporting goods store. On the north end of the unit, Sidney has similar accommodations. Wibaux on the east side of the unit provides some of the amenities, but not all.
