  • Very open country, good optics are a must
  • Know where gravel roads are located, it's easy to be stranded during muddy road conditions

On The Ground

This area is located north of Miles City and covers a very large area, with lots of sagebrush flats, rolling grass ridges and open prairies. This can be a great area to also do some bird hunting, and just enjoy what the prairies of eastern Montana have to offer.

Over the last several years, eastern Montana's antelope population has been on the decline. Bucks can still be found, but hunting is much harder than in years past. Private land can be frustrating.

Terrain

Hunt District 701 is very large with vast expanses of prairie and sagebrush flats, this provides good antelope habitat. Some areas are extremely flat and can make getting close to antelope very difficult.

  • Roughly 7,224 square miles

  • 18.2% public land

  • Elevations from 2,250-3,600 feet

The majority of the unit consists of open sagebrush flats with some grassy ridges and draws. There are very few pockets of juniper or ponderosa pine. There are some cottonwood trees in the creek bottoms and a few alkali flats with little to no vegetation. Most water in this unit is from cattle stock ponds and tanks.

This district has a lot of large private ranches located within it. There are some that provide access through the Block Management program, and a few others will give hunting permission. There are also some small isolated parcels of BLM and state lands. A GPS with a landownership overlay is recommended to help access these parcels.

Miles City is located in the southeast corner of the district and provides the best accommodations. This is a great city with many options for lodging, restaurants, gas, groceries and a sporting goods store. Make sure to stop at Jersey Lilly in Ingomar, which has the oldest bar in the state of Montana.
