On The Ground
This district is located in north central Montana. It is south of Havre and the southern boundary is the Missouri River. The Rocky Boy Indian Reservation lies within the district and is closed to hunting. The eastern boundary is another reservation and that is also closed to hunting. The antelope are found scattered throughout this district on a mix of private, public and state ground.
Antelope populations are down in this district as they were hit with a severe winter kill in 2010 and 2011. The herds are recovering but the population is still down from historic levels.
Terrain
This district is mostly rolling grassland hills, with some CRP and dryland farming mixed throughout the district. Generally this district is slightly broken, rolling hill country and as you travel south you get more into the breaks and rougher terrain. There are streams, coulees and drainages that cut through the district and can be used for stalking purposes.
Roughly 3,996 square miles
19.1% public land
Elevations from 2,300-6,500 feet
Vegetation
Most of the district is a mix of various grasses and forbs along with big sage and cactus. Some of the streams and creeks have agriculture fields adjacent to them. There is a lot of dryland farming and CRP stands scattered throughout the district. The southern portion has pine trees, cedars and junipers scattered throughout the breaks.
Access
Highway 2 runs the entire length of the northern boundary. Gravel county roads run throughout the area. Access to many of the large private lands can be difficult, but there are state sections and BLM lands scattered throughout the district. A few ranches are in the Block Management Program. Rain can make travel difficult, stay on gravel or pavement.
Camping and Lodging
Havre has several motels, restaurants, gas stations as well as sporting goods stores. There are campgrounds along the Missouri River. Camping is allowed on state and BLM land.
