On The Ground
This district is located in northeast Montana. It is northwest of Sydney and the northern boundary is the Missouri River. The eastern boundary is the North Dakota state line. The antelope are scattered throughout this district, with the higher densities in the southern half.
Antelope populations are down in this district as they were hit with a severe winter kill in 2010 and 2011. The herds are recovering, but the population is still down from historic levels.
Terrain
This district is mostly rolling grassland hills, with a mix of CRP and lots of dry land farming throughout the district. There are streams, coulees and drainages that cut through the district and can be used for stalking purposes. This is a great area for glassing and enough terrain breaks to allow for decent stalking conditions.
Roughly 3,960 square miles
17.6% public land
Elevations from 2,100-2,700 feet
Vegetation
Most of the district is a mix of various grasses and forbs along with sage and some areas of cactus. Some of the streams and creeks have agriculture fields adjacent to them. There is a lot of dry land farming and CRP stands scattered throughout the district.
Access
Highway 200 runs the entire length of the southern boundary and Highway 16 runs diagonally across the district from north to south on the eastern portion. Highways 13 and 24 run north to south through this district. Gravel county roads run throughout the area. The antelope are found on both private and public lands. Access to many of the large private lands can be difficult, but there are state sections and BLM lands scattered throughout the district. Several ranches are in the Block Management Program. Rain can make travel difficult, stay on the gravel or pavement.
Camping and Lodging
Sydney has several motels, restaurants, gas stations as well as a sporting goods store. The small towns of Culbertson, Richey and Circle have gas, food and a motel. There are campgrounds in some of the towns in this district. Camping is allowed on state and BLM land.
