On The Ground

Hunt District 540 is located just north and east of Billings and provides some good sightseeing opportunities. Pompeys Pillar is where William Clark from the Lewis and Clark voyage signed his name near the banks of the Yellowstone River.

Unless you have access to private ground, this district can be very difficult to hunt. Antelope numbers are minimal with the majority of the herds on private land. Access is limited with only a few isolated single sections of BLM and some state lands. Finding antelope on these isolated parcels is very difficult.

Terrain

This district is made up of mostly broken terrain with lots of coulees, ridges and scattered conifers. Some of the creeks running through the district have croplands, both dryland and irrigated.

  • Roughly 1,473 square miles

  • 13% public land

  • Elevations from 3,100-4,750 feet

Scattered throughout most of the unit there are many timbered areas with ponderosa pine and juniper trees. Between the pockets of timber are large grassy flats with sagebrush ridges and creek bottoms. The southern end of the district near Shepard has many agriculture fields, and large cottonwood bottoms can be found along the Yellowstone River.

The best opportunities are on the southern half of the unit. Single sections of BLM and some sections of state land are your best public access. The majority of the antelope populations are on private land, and permission is required. County roads are scattered throughout the area and will provide good road access to wherever needed.

Billings provides the best accomodations and is just a short drive away from the unit. This town has has any sporting goods needs, lodging, or restaurants that you may need.
