On The Ground

This hunt district is located in south central Montana and east of Billings and north of Hardin. This district has the Yellowstone River for the northern boundary and the Crow Indian Reservation for a southern boundary. The antelope are typically found on private land in this area and access can be difficult, it will require spending some time to acquire permission.

Antelope numbers are down in this hunting district from historic levels. It will take some time for this district to recover, but the numbers are stable and increasing. There is a respectable buck to doe ratio. The general tag is for either sex antelope.

Terrain

Most of this district has gentle terrain broken up with numerous coulees, small sandstone ridges and benches. There is a large butte that runs the length of the district and it is covered with timber. There is a lot of farmed cropland in this district.

  • Roughly 854 square miles

  • 4.4% public land

  • Elevations from 2,800-3,800 feet

Most of the district is grassland mixed with farmland. The streams and Yellowstone River have irrigated fields all along them. On the east half is Pine Ridge covered with patches of pine, cedar and juniper. The broken terrain is also where sagebrush can be found on the rangeland. The entire district has a lot of dry land farming throughout it.

This hunt district is accessed with several good gravel county roads. The majority of the antelope are found on private land and access to the private land is difficult, but with some time invested permission can be obtained on several places. There are state sections, and ranches in the Block Management program in this unit that give access to public hunting.

Billings and Hardin have several motels, restaurants, gas stations and sporting goods stores. Camping is allowed in several campgrounds along the Yellowstone River.
