On The Ground

This district is located in central Montana, just west of White Sulphur Springs. The district is large and includes a lot of the Big Belt Mountains, but the antelope are really only located in the lower elevations from the foothills out into the prairies. The antelope are found mostly on private land and access can be difficult and will require spending some time to acquire permission.

Antelope populations are down from historic levels but are increasing. Antelope are generally located in the central and southern portion of this district. There are additional doe, fawn antelope tags that can be applied for.

Terrain

This district is highly varied and includes large flat open range country with a lot of agriculture lands throughout. There are large expanses of open steep, hilly, broken country. As you get closer to the mountains the country changes to broken with more elevation changes and more drainages. A majority of the area is good terrain for stalking antelope.

  • Roughly 1829 square miles

  • 38% public land

  • Elevations from 4,800-7,700 feet

Much of the district that antelope reside on is open flat grass benches with numerous dryland and irrigated agriculture fields mixed in. There are large areas of hilly sagebrush country especially in the southern one third of the district. Near the base of the mountain the terrain is more broken with some cedars, junipers and conifer trees. The center pivots and irrigated fields with alfalfa attract a lot of antelope.

This district is accessed by Highway 89 and 360 with numerous county roads throughout the district. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access to the private land is difficult. Permission should be obtained prior to applying for this district. There are state sections and a couple of Block Management Areas as well as the Smith River Wildlife Management Area. Some of the large private ranches are leased out to outfitters.

White Sulphur Springs has several motels, restaurants, gas stations and a sporting goods store. Camping is allowed on the National Forest lands in the district and Newlan Reservoir and the Smith River have campgrounds.
